Little Couture Designers: explaining how a garment comes to life

Li Zihan, founder and chief designer of LADIAQUA, visited Qiming Rose Kindergarten to explain the journey of a garment in a way children could understand: from design, measurement and fabric selection to pattern making, sewing and handwork.

The session began with children’s natural questions: how is a garment made, why do fabrics feel different, and how does color arrive on cloth?

Li Zihan translated the couture process into eight simple steps: drawing the design, taking measurements, choosing fabric, making patterns, cutting, sewing, pressing and handwork. Each step was explained through what it actually does in the making of a garment.

For the fabric segment, children touched samples of natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk and wool, observing softness, drape and skin feel. Li also introduced the difference between yarn dyeing, fabric dyeing and garment dyeing in simple language.

In the making demonstration, the children saw pattern tools, sewing and handwork steps, and began to understand why a beautiful garment often depends on many quiet preparations and adjustments.

At the end, the children became little couture designers. With flowers, leaves, fabric pieces, beads and lace, they created imaginative garment sketches on model drawings. More than ten children joined the session, and each work kept its own sense of imagination.

Beyond this session, Qiming Rose Kindergarten appointed Li Zihan as a fashion project expert, inviting her to provide professional guidance and technical consultation for children’s fashion courses, fashion design and making.
